Maria Ushiromiya

Who is Maria Ushiromiya?

Maria Ushiromiya is a character from Ryukishi07's murder mystery visual novel Umineko no Naku Koro ni (also commonly known as Umineko When They Cry.) She is the daughter of Rosa Ushiromiya & is Battler Ushiromiya's youngest cousin (9 years). She is very knowledgable about magic & the occult as well as a strong lover and believer of the Golden Witch Beatrice.

Maria, while 9 years-old, acts a bit young for her age which often gets her in trouble with her mom, she owns a vast knowledge when it comes to her interests that being magic & witches and becomes very upset when people deny their existence. She has a vocal stim and often says 'Uu-' at the begining and end of her sentences, this also gets her in trouble with her mom.

She is very kind and honest so much so it is often affirmed and demonstrated in the text that she is not capable of lying and only says things she belives to be true even if it's not.

For all of the reasons stated above she dosen't fit in with her peers, has no friends and is frequently bullied, also for the reasons above it's very widely accepted to read Maria as autistic.

Why Is She The Best?

I mean ... look at her, ok but in all seriousness i'm trying to be a little vague for spoiler reasons but Maria has always been a character who despite her shitty life has been able to wake up & go: "today will be okay even if i have to mold it that way with my my bare hands" and she does, as the Witch of Origins she is able to create something out of nothing, including her own happiness.

But above it all Maria is a character who is filled with so much love in her heart but born in an environment that seems determined to snuff it out. I will now paraphrase a quote she says in ep.7 that further expands on her witch title :

"Beato called me the Witch of Origins. And she aslo said that eventually, I might become a Creator, who can create anything alone. All by myself, I can create something out of nothing!"

Also, she actively shares parallels with Jesus Christ which is really funny & awesome, she's awesome, my silly autistic catholic daughter.

I almost forgot to mention her best friend, Sakutarou, he's a lion plush, he also has a vocal stim, he goes 'Uryuu-', he's cool.
